Hazel Lee, 1932
Hazel Lee, born in Portland, Oregon, in 1912, was a pioneering aviator and one of the remarkable women who served as a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) during World War II. Her story is a testament to her determination, courage, and the significant contributions of women in aviation during a crucial time in history.
Before her WASP service, Hazel Lee was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor. She held various flying records and was a skilled aerial acrobat, performing daring stunts at airshows. In 1943, driven by a strong sense of patriotism and a desire to support the war effort, she joined the WASP program.

Josephine Myrtle Corbin, often known as “The Four-Legged Girl,” was a remarkable individual who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became widely known for her unique physical condition. Born on May 12, 1868, in Lincoln County, Tennessee, Josephine was born with a rare condition known as dipygus or pygopagus twinning, which resulted in her having two complete lower bodies side by side, each with its own pair of legs.
Josephine’s condition was incredibly rare, occurring in approximately 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 live births, and it fascinated medical professionals and the general public alike. Her lower bodies were fully formed, complete with reproductive organs, allowing her to menstruate and even give birth to four children throughout her life. Remarkably, her children were born without her condition.

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, also known as the Ho-Chunk Nation of Nebraska, is a Native American tribe with a rich cultural heritage and a resilient history. They are part of the larger Ho-Chunk Nation, which originally inhabited the present-day states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
The history of the Winnebago Tribe is marked by both adversity and resilience. Like many indigenous peoples, they faced the challenges of European contact and westward expansion in the 19th century, which resulted in the displacement of their ancestral lands. The tribe’s forced removal and resettlement in Nebraska during the mid-1800s were part of the broader Native American experience during this period.

Ah-Weh-Eyu, commonly known as Goldie Jamison Conklin, was a distinguished member of the Seneca Nation, hailing from the Allegany Reservation in western New York. Her life and contributions exemplify the resilience, cultural preservation, and advocacy for Native American communities during the 20th century.
Born in 1910, Goldie Jamison Conklin witnessed and navigated a period of profound change for Native American tribes, marked by shifts in government policies, land rights, and cultural preservation. As a member of the Seneca Nation, she actively engaged in efforts to preserve and revitalize Seneca language, culture, and traditions.
Goldie played a pivotal role in preserving Seneca language, which was at risk of fading away due to cultural assimilation and English language dominance. She worked as a language instructor, sharing her knowledge with younger generations and teaching them the intricacies of the Seneca language. Her dedication contributed significantly to the preservation of this vital aspect of Seneca culture.
