Photo Restoration Of The Month: October
Unmasking a Creepy Viral Mystery: Halloween in Italy Photo by MikiMouse88 CC BY SA 4.0
For this month’s restoration feature at Photo Restoration Rescue, we are diving into a photograph that regularly sends shivers down the internet’s spine. If you frequent historical forums or love a good spooky mystery, you have likely come across this unsettling gem: a turn-of-the-century snapshot titled “Halloween in Italy,” originally shared on Wikimedia Commons by user MikiMouse88.
At first glance, it looks like a scene straight out of a folk-horror film. The figures stand in crude, handmade costumes with exaggerated, distorted masks. Bringing a photo like this back to life through restoration highlights just how much photographic mediums have changed.
However, restoring a photo also means uncovering its history, and this image hides a fascinating paradox. While it circulates globally as a vintage “Halloween” photo, Halloween as we know it, rooted in Gaelic traditions and American pop culture, was not celebrated in Italy when this photo was taken. Instead, Italians traditionally observed Ognissanti (All Saints’ Day) and I Morti (All Souls’ Day) in early November. These were deeply solemn, religious days focused on honoring ancestry, regional fairs, and family gatherings, rather than dressing up to trick-or-treat.
We revive photos, videos, and documents with care, precision, and purpose.
